THE WOODLANDS - After seeing its 15-match home winning streak come to an end with a loss to Northwestern State Friday, the Sam Houston State women’s tennis team bounced back to take down Central Arkansas 7-0 Saturday at the Woodlands Tennis Club.
In singles competition, sophomore Sahaja Yamalapalli defeated Chunxi Xin 6-3, 7-6 (5-0), and freshman Isidora Zivkovic defeated Fuka Nonoyama 5-7, 7-5, 6-1. Sophomore Karla DeLaLuz Montalvo took down Marli Van Heerden 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, and junior Lusine Chobanyan topped Yada Vasupongchai in straight sets, 7-5, 7-5. Sophomore Roos Gerritsen also picked up a victory in straight sets, downing QiLi Ma 6-4, 6-1, and freshman Petra Kaszas defeated Rada Manataweewat 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 1-0 (12-10).
The Bearkats won the doubles point for the fourth time this season. The duo of Yamalapalli and Zivkovic topped Mei Ishimura and Vasupongchai 6-3, while the team of DeLaLuz Montalvo and Kaszas sealed it with a 7-6 (7-4) victory over Ma and Manataweewat.
In Friday’s 4-3 loss to Northwestern State, Yamalapalli won her match 6-2, 6-0. Chobanyan also won in singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. The Bearkats also took the doubles point from the Demons. Gerritsen and Chobanyan won 7-6, while DeLaLuz Montalvo and Kaszas won 7-6 as well. Sam Houston State currently sits fifth in the Southland Conference standings with a league mark of 6-3 and an overall record of 12-6. The Bearkats hit the road for their final regular season matches of the season with a contest at Southeastern Louisiana April 12 at 1 p.m. and the finale at McNeese April 14 at 1 p.m.
