SAN ANTONIO - Senior Lindsey McLeod threw her third no-hitter of the season and senior Ashley Goetz drove in three runs to lead the Sam Houston State softball team to a Southland Conference series sweep over Incarnate Word with a 9-0 victory in five innings Saturday at Cardinals Field.
McLeod needed only 68 pitches to take care of the Cardinals (4-40 overall, 2-22 in SLC). She finished with seven strikeouts and two walks as the Bearkats (29-19, 20-4) extended their winning streak to 13 and remain atop the SLC standings with three league games left in the regular season.
The Bearkats took control of the game early with a six-run second inning.
Goetz led off with a solo home run to left field, and sophomore Sheridan Fisher followed with a single to center. After a Cardinals’ error, sophomore Karlee Canada reached on a fielder’s choice, stole second and came around to score along with Fisher on a two-run double off the bat of junior Megan McDonald to make it 3-0.
Sam Houston State was far from done as sophomore Brooke Malia ripped an RBI single to left. Freshman Kyndal Kutac singled to center field with two outs, and Goetz chased starting pitcher Jessica Rodriguez from the game with a two-run single.
Sam Houston State ended it with three runs in the fifth. Kutac had an RBI single, and she was able to get in a rundown and successfully steal second while junior Tiffany Thompson, who reached on a single, stole home.
Sophomore Bailey White drove in the final run with a single up the middle.
McLeod (18-7) tossed a perfect game in an 8-0 win over UT Martin in five innings on March 1. She also threw a no-hitter against Northwestern State in a 6-0 victory on March 8.
The Bearkats return to action for their final nonconference game of the season at Houston Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.
