HUNTSVILLE – Ashley Goetz crushed a walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh to lift Sam Houston State to a 3-2 nonconference win over UT Arlington Tuesday at Bearkat Softball Complex.
The Bearkats (20-19 overall, 11-4 in SLC) clinched the season-series victory against the Mavericks after taking two out of three. Freshman Regan Dunn pitched 5 2/3 shutout innings in relief to improve to 5-5.
The Mavericks (18-22) took the early lead with two runs off a double, a hit batter and a single in the top of the second off sophomore pitcher Annie Bailey, who was making her seventh start of the season for Sam Houston. She cruised in the first before she ran into trouble with one out in the second.
Junior Tiffany Thompson finally got the Bearkats on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. She blasted her second home run of the season over the wall in left field.
Junior Hunter Ervin tied the game at 2 in the fifth. Sophomore Bailey White singled to start the inning and courtesy runner Kayte Martinez moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and an error. Ervin then doubled down the third baseline to bring in Martinez.
The Bearkats had a chance to added another run in the fifth when junior Megan McDonald singled with two outs, but courtesy runner Alexandra Diaz was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second.
After Dunn got out of a one-out jam with two runners on in the top of the seventh, Goetz quickly ended it with a no-doubt-about-it home run over the wall in left. It was her second home run of the season
Next up for the Bearkats will be a three-game Southland Conference series at home against Abilene Christian. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m. Friday and wrap up the series at noon Sunday.
