WILMINGTON, North Carolina - With the National Basketball Association's draft just hours away, UNCW's Buzz Peterson finds himself on a unique list: He is one of 32 active NCAA Division I head basketball coaches that was selected in the NBA Draft.
The Cleveland Cavaliers tabbed Peterson in the seventh round of the 1985 draft. Peterson, who begins his third season with the Seahawks in 2012-13, will be watching closely when the selection show begins at 7 p.m. EST at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.
According to Mike Douchant, author of the Encyclopedia of College Basketball and guru of the fact-based CollegeHoopedia.com, Peterson is one of three state coaches drafted following their collegiate careers. UNC Asheville's Eddie Biedenbach was selected in the fourth round of the 1968 draft by the Los Angeles Lakers and N.C. State's Mark Gottfried was chosen in the seventh round of the 1987 draft by the Detroit Pistons.
Overall, 11 active NCAA Division I head coaches were picked in the first or second round of the draft.
