NEWARK, Delaware - UNCW sophomore right side hitter Christi Laite was named Second-Team All-CAA on Thursday as the Colonial Athletic Association announced its annual awards on the eve of the 2011 CAA Volleyball Championship.
Laite becomes the first Seahawk player to earn all-conference accolades since Bea Gerevich was a Second-Team All-CAA pick in 2003.
"This is a great honor for Christi and her dedicated teammates that helped our team reach new heights this season," said UNCW Head Coach Amy Bambenek. "Christi has come a long way in a short amount of time and we are very excited about what the future holds for her."
A native of Severna Park, Md., Laite played in 29 matches for the Seahawks and ranked sixth in the league kills per set (3.28) while pacing the squad in attack percentage (.233). Laite also pitched 83 total blocks and 27 service aces to finish the season fifth in the league in points per frame (3.92). Defensively, Laite averaged 1.42 digs per set as she recorded three double-doubles during the campaign.
In other awards handed out Thursday, Towson sophomore Katy Buck was named the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association Volleyball Player-of-the-Year in a vote of the league's 10 head coaches. Delaware's Renee Tomko was tabbed as the league's Setter-of-the-Year while Northeastern's Natalia Skiba was selected as the circuit's Defensive Specialist-of-the-Year. Northeastern freshman Jillian Briner took home league Rookie-of-the-Year honors and Towson Head Coach Bruce Atkinson was recognized as the CAA Coach-of-the-Year.
