WILMINGTON, North Carolina - Sophomores Olga Blank and Angie Sekely of UNCW have been named the Colonial Athletic Association's Doubles Team-of-the-Week after sweeping three matches last week for the 75th-ranked Seahawks.
UNCW raised its record to 12-5 overall and 6-1 in the CAA with convincing victories over Coastal Carolina, James Madison and Delaware. The Seahawks are in Florida this week to take on South Florida and Stetson.
Blank, from Kfar Sava, Israel, and Sekely, from Mississauga, Ontario, improved to 4-0 this spring with the three wins. The tandem edged Coastal's Mikaela Kristofersson and Katie Fosnacht, 8-5, at No. 2 doubles and routed JMU's Katherine Bulling and Michelle Nguyen, 8-1, also at the No. 2 position. Blank and Sekely then edged Delaware's Samantha Carnall and Sophie Sjoberg-Sundstrom, 8-7 (5), at No. 1 doubles.
"I'm very happy for Olga and Angie to receive this honor after three big doubles wins last week," said Jenny Garrity, UNCW's veteran coach. "While they played all of last season together, they have only played a handful of matches this year. I commend their willingness to team up again with almost no practice together and find a way to use the tools they are best at - playing aggressive, moving well and communicating throughout each point.
"Their two CAA wins last weekend helped us secure a bye in the first round of the CAA tourney, which we were playing for. Our team is playing really solid right now and we look forward to another tough week of matches while in Florida."
It marks the second CAA recognition of the spring for Sekely, who was also honored during the week of March 13 for her doubles play with Kelly Cameron.
The Seahawks begin their two-match swing in the Sunshine State on Wednesday against South Florida at 2 p.m.
