CHARLOTTE, North Carolina - The UNCW women's tennis team ducked inside and picked up their third straight victory with a 6-1 dismantling of Appalachian State Sunday at the Charlotte Indoor Tennis Center.
The Seahawks raised their record to 9-5 on the season after cruising past the 9-5 Mountaineers on the final leg of a two-match weekend swing to the Queen City. UNCW and UNC Charlotte battled to a 1-all draw on Saturday before inclement weather forced postponement of the match.
In Sunday's victory, the Seahawks played singles first and won five of six matches. UNCW sophomore Olga Blank had no trouble with Jessica Thaggard, 6-0, 6-3, at No. 2 singles, Angie Sekely breezed past Kim-Lea Dinh, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 3, and Kelly Cameron pounded Gabby Gabriel, 6-1, 6-2.
Freshman Alyssa Ritchie blasted Gisela Fernandez, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 5 singles and Christina Riley dispatched Blakeley Bean, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 6.
ASU collected its lone win when Ellie Linsell trimmed UNCW's Christina Lee, 6-4, 7-5, at the top of the lineup.
UNCW swept all three doubles matches to capture the point. Lee and Ritchie crushed Linsell and Fernandez, 8-2, at the No. 1 position, while Blank and Sekely shut out Bean and Gabriel, 8-0, at No. 2. At No. 3 doubles, Cameron and Miller Hales rolled over Thaggard and Dinh, 8-2.
The Seahawks return to action on Wednesday with a 2:30 p.m. match against regional rival Coastal Carolina
