WG Preview: Pinehurst Spring Challenge

WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The UNCW women's golf team begins a busy week of action as it takes part in the 2012 Pinehurst Spring Challenge.
The Seahawks are one of 17 teams that will take part in the 54-hole event on the par-72, 5,993-yard layout of Pinehurst's No. 6 Course, the same course that UNCW captured the 2011 Colonial Athletic Association Women's Golf Championship last April.
UNCW will square off against in-state foes East Carolina, Elon, North Carolina State and UNCG as well as fellow CAA rivals James Madison and Old Dominion. Rounding out the tournament field is the College of Charleston, Georgetown, Marshall, Maryland, Middle Tennessee State, Penn State, Richmond, Samford, Tennessee Tech and Western Michigan.
The five-count-four competition gets underway Monday with 36 holes in a shotgun format starting at 9 a.m. The final round is slated for an 8:45 a.m. shotgun start on Tuesday.
UNCW is back in action after posting an 11th place finish at the LSU Golf Classic March 9-11 at the University Club. Senior Sofia Hagsund, who leads the team with a 76.16 stroke average, finished in a tie for 20th place while sophomore Laverry Kumar ended the event one shot back of Hagsund in a tie for 23rd. Hagsund and Kumar are expected to be joined in the lineup by senior Alei Mitchell and sophomores Lori Beth Adams and Jeanne Metivier.
After its visit to Pinehurst, UNCW returns home to host the UNCW Lady Seahawk Classic at River Landing Golf Course in nearby Wallace. The Seahawks will welcome 11 teams to for the 54-hole tournament.
