TSUTigers sat down with Avery to talk about her TSU experience.
TSUTigers: Talk about your overall TSU experience.
A: My overall TSU experience was very unique over the past four years. I was able to grow more confidently in myself and I was blessed to establish lifelong sisters.
TSUTigers: What do you love most about TSU?
A: What I love most about TSU is the pride and the tradition of the school. We are proud to bleed blue and we want to spread it throughout the city. TSU has rich history and the administration wants to continue the legacy by passing the tradition to each incoming class.
TSUTigers: What will you miss most about TSU?
A: What I will miss most about TSU is fellowship of Christian athletes. This organization supported me throughout my years at TSU and helped me to grow spiritually. This is was my family here at school and they loved me regardless of my circumstances. They were my backbone through those hard practices and games.
TSUTigers: What is your most memorable basketball moment at TSU?
A: My most memorable basketball moment at TSU was winning senior night!!!! Before the game even started I was not as focused because all of my family except for my mother was stuck in traffic due to a car accident. My family didn’t even come into the game until four minutes left in the second half. We were down 13 and came back to win against EKU. That moment I shared with my teammates will be treasured in my heart forever!!
TSUTigers: What is your most memorable non-basketball moment at TSU?
A: The most memorable non-basketball moment was our freshman week. We came on to TSU’s campus so excited about our next adventure in life. We were able to meet new people from all over and most importantly the seven of us had the opportunity to learn about each other. I think freshman week helped us establish the strong bond we have today!!
TSUTigers: How do you feel social networking played a role in this season?
A: Social networking played a significant role this season just from the girls. I think every player on our team posted something on social media about the games. This also allowed friends and families to keep up with us when we were on the road.
TSUTigers: Do you have a favorite TSU fan/supporter? If so, who?
A: Ms. Pinkerton! She would be at every home game supporting us. She would cut out the newspaper articles each game and give them to the girls. Her favorite line was: “Shoot it like ya want it…. Because I want it!!!! Bend ya knees shoot it lightly”. She was heard throughout the gym. I love her, she is so sweet to us.
TSUTigers: What advice would you give to incoming freshman?
A: First enjoy every second because it goes by fast! Secondly learn from your mistakes and grow as a player and young lady.
TSUTigers: What was your most challenging class at TSU?
A: My most challenging class at TSU was physics!!! That is the most difficult course I have taken but, I MADE IT!!!
TSUTigers: Who was your favorite professor?
A: Dr. Brown was one of my favorite professors. She was the example that says the sky is the limit as long as I put in work. She is a TSU alumnus and a strong woman. Even if she doesn’t know it, she has influenced me a lot.
TSUTigers: What organizations were you a part of outside of basketball?
A: Fellowship of Christian Athletes, My Sisters Keeper, Student Athletic Advisor Committee (campus and conference representative)
TSUTigers: Who have been the most influential people to you at TSU?
A: Daddy Brown has been the most influential person to me at TSU. He has supported me since my freshman year. He has been there for prayer, injuries and just someone to talk to. He is a strong man of God.
TSUTigers: What’s next for you?
A: I will be attending the University of Kentucky for physical therapy school.
TSUTigers: Once you are an alumnus, how will you stay connected with TSU?
A: I am the Lady Tigers number one fan; I will keep up with the Tigers by social media and coming to the games when I get a chance.
TSUTigers: What do you know now that you didn’t know coming in as a freshman?
A: Mental toughness. I have pushed my mental toughness throughout these years and I have surprised myself with the amount of pressure I can handle.
TSUTigers: What have you learned at TSU that you will keep with you for the rest of your life?
A: I have learned how mentally tough I truly am. I have learned to never give up and that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
TSUTigers: Is there anything else that you would like to say to the TSU family?
A: To my TSU family: I thank all of you so much for impacting my four years as a lady tiger!! I am truly blessed to have had a family to support my teammates and I throughout each season. I love you and bleed blue FOREVER :-)
