Bulldogs Open Defense Of MVC Title Hosting Creighton
WHAT'S AHEAD: Kicking off defense of its 2011 Missouri Valley Conference title, the 46th-rated Drake men's tennis team hosts Creighton on Saturday (March 31) at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center. The league opener for the Bulldogs is slated to start at 10:00 a.m.
A LOOK BACK: Drake finished its week, which included a pair of matches in Texas, with a perfect 4-0 mark. The Bulldogs earned triumphs against Sacramento State (4-1), SMU (4-3), UMKC (7-0) and Green Bay (7-0).
Junior Anis Ghorbel (Sfax, Tunisia) led the charge for Drake posting a 7-0 mark en route to collecting MVC Player of the Week accolades for the third time this season.
Ghorbel, freshman Ben Mullis (Leicestershire, England), junior James McKie (Edinburgh, Scotland), senior Jonathan Hadash (Lapid, Israel) and freshman Alen Salibasic (Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina) turned in unblemished 4-0, 4-0, 3-0, 3-0 and 3-0 ledgers in singles action, respectively.
In doubles, Ghorbel and McKie remained perfect, netting 3-0 and 2-0 marks.
IN OUR LAST MEETING: Beginning its drive to capture its fourth Missouri Valley Conference regular season title in the last five seasons, then 71st-rated Drake registered the Bulldogs seventh consecutive victory dispatching Creighton, 7-0, in the league opener for both schools on March 26, 2011.
Ballivian added a triumph at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-0, to extend the Bulldogs' advantage to 2-0.
Jean Erasmus (Windhoek, Namibia) stretched the margin to within one point of victory with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 3.
Cesar Bracho (Luque, Paraguay) booked the match in the win column for Drake at No. 5, 6-0, 6-1.
UP NEXT: Drake rounds out the road portion of its schedule visiting Bradley and Illinois State on April 6 and 7, respectively. Both contests are scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
