AUBURN, Ala. - Mississippi State Lady Bulldog Tennis completed its first day of fall competition in the Auburn Invitational Friday with outstanding results, finishing 7-3 in the day's singles competition and 2-1 in doubles.

The Lady Bulldogs began play with several victorious matches, including a win for junior Alexandra Perper, who took the No. 122 slot in the ITA's preseason rankings released Friday.  Perper took down Sophie Van Den Aarssen of Louisiana Lafayette 6-3, 6-1, during the first round of play in Flight 1 of the tournament.

Newcomer Georgiana Patrasc represented MSU in Flight 2, defeating Polina Konop of Northwestern State in a 6-1, 7-6(3) decision in the first round.  Freshman Lien Van Geel clinched a win in her debut match as a Lady Bulldog, taking down Melissa Burckhartt of Louisiana Lafayette 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 in Flight 4.

Naomi Tran dropped her Flight 3 first-round match 6-3, 6-2 against Virginie Stein of Kennesaw State University while newcomer Sarai Flores fell 6-0, 6-2 in her first round match in Flight 6 to Lamar's Helene Czudek.

The second round of play proved to be very successful for the Maroon and White, as Perper defeated Tatiana Larina of NSU 6-4, 7-5. Patrasc followed, posting an impressive 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 comeback triumph in the second round against Emma Levy of Tulane, who is currently ranked No. 13 in the Southern Region. Both Patrasc and Perper will compete in the title match of their respective flights in Saturday's competition.

Van Geel fell 6-2, 6-4 in her second round of play to Plamena Kurteva of host Auburn. Tran rallied from her first round loss to take down Ahlqvist of ULL 3-6, 6-1, 11-9 in consolation action. Flores posted a consolation victory as well, defeating her Louisiana Lafayette opponent, Juliette Clement, in a hard-fought 6-7(3), 6-1, 10-8 decision.

In the first round of doubles competition Friday, Patrasc and Perper were unable to seal the deal against Alexandra Apostu and Virginie Stein of KSU, falling 8-3 in Flight 1. However, both of the other State duos came out on top. Tran and Van Geel paired up to defeat Louisiana Lafayette's Nicole Breaux and Melissa Burckhartt 8-2, and Dion and Flores took down Caitlin Kitchen and Stephanie Woods of Georgia Southern 8-6.
