Lady Bulldog Tennis Falls To No. 2 Ranked Florida

STARKVILLE, Miss. - After taking a week-long hiatus from conference play that resulted in a 2-0 mark, Mississippi State's women's tennis team (6-8, 0-5 SEC) fell in their return to SEC competition Friday in a 7-0 decision to the second-ranked Lady Gators of Florida (12-1, 5-0).

Florida was able to gain an early 1-0 lead, posting victories on all three doubles courts beginning with court one where No. 3 ranked Sofie Oyen and Allie Will defeated Alexandra Perper and Naomi Tran of MSU 8-2. Court two was the next to complete play as UF's No. 11 ranked duo of Lauren Embree and Joanna Mather defeated Ekaterina Iakovleva and Olesya Tsigvintseva in an 8-1 decision. The Lady Gators finalized their doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory for Caroline Hitimana and Olivia Janowicz against Mississippi State's Roseline Dion and Petra Ferancova at the No. 3 position.

Mississippi State was unable to mount a rally in singles, as Florida took control of singles with early wins on courts 3 and 4. At the No. 4 position, No. 39 Oyen took down the MSU freshman Tran 6-1, 6-2. Mather for the Lady Gators, currently ranked at No. 19 in he nation, then followed with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph against Iakovleva on court three.

Embree secured the victory for the Lady Gators, posting the clinching point with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph against MSU's No. 116 ranked Perper at the No. 1 position.

The next Florida victory went to the nation's No. 1 ranked singles player, Will, as she posted a 6-3, 6-2 win against State's Tsigvintseva on court two. Hitimana's 6-3, 6-4 win against Ferancova at the No. 5 position sealed the 7-0 sweep for the Lady Gators.

Mississippi State will be back in action March 25 as they travel to South Carolina to take on the 32nd-ranked Gamecocks. Sunday's match is set to begin at Noon CT. Updates will be available through Twitter via @mstateWT.
