This Week in Vandal Track & Field
WAC Championships (Moscow, Idaho) May 8-11

Looking Forward
Idaho hosts the Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships this week at the Dan O’Brien Track & Field Complex. The men’s championship will be contested by Fresno State, Idaho, Louisiana Tech and Utah State, while Fresno State, Hawai`i, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, Nevada, New Mexico State and Utah State will compete for the women’s team crown. It will be Idaho’s first on-campus conference championship track meet since hosting the 2000 Big West Conference Championships. Idaho’s men won the title and the Vandal women took third at that meet.

Historically Speaking
Both Vandal squads finished fifth last year at the WAC Outdoor Championships at Honolulu, Hawai`i. Overall, Idaho’s men claimed five individual titles, while the Vandal women won four. Senior Andrew Blaser (decathlon) is the lone returning champion for Idaho on the men’s side, while junior Liga Velvere (400m hurdles) and senior Gabby Midles (hammer throw) return to defend their crowns on the women’s side. Midles is the two-time returning winner in the women’s hammer.

A Quick Recap
In the final tune-up before the conference meet, Idaho only competed a partial group but got big-time results. The Vandals won eight individual titles at the Vandal Jamboree at home, while one runner made history at the Oregon Twilight on Saturday. Junior Mike Marshall jumped into third all-time at Idaho and No. 24 in the NCAA with a toss of 230-6 (70.26m) in the men’s javelin at the Vandal Jamboree. Sophomore Alycia Butterworth ran a career-best 10:18.78 in the 3000m steeplechase to move into third all-time at 31st in the NCAA in the event.
