This Week in Vandal Track & Field:
Duane Hartman Invitational (Spokane, Wash.)
April 27-28

Looking Forward
After the teams competed across five different meets last week, Idaho men’s and women’s track and field gets an easier assignment this time around. The Vandals will compete at the Duane Hartman Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Spokane Falls Community College. The men’s and women’s 5000m runs will be Friday evening, while the remainder of the meet will be on Saturday. It will be Idaho’s final regular-season road trip of the season before the Vandal Jamboree next week and the WAC Championships the following week, both at the Dan O’Brien Track & Field Complex.

Historically Speaking
When Idaho competed at the Duane Hartman Invitational last season, the Vandals won seven titles at the meet. Returning champions this weekend include junior Colin Briggs, who took the long jump title last year, junior Keli Hall (800m) and sophomore Holly Stanton (3000m Steeplechase). Overall, Idaho had 18 top-three finishes at the meet and set several career-best marks.

A Quick Recap
Idaho made 12 all-time top-10 entries and posted Western Athletic Conference-leading marks in five men’s events and two women’s events while competing at the Mt. SAC Relays, California Invitational, Bryan Clay Invitational, Beach Invitational and Cougar Invitational last week. The team also netted dozens of personal bests throughout the week, with some athletes doing so in single events on consecutive days. In addition to their conference standings, Idaho men and women moved themselves into NCAA West Preliminary Round contention in seven events to bring the team’s total so far this year to 15.

NCAA Outdoor Qualification
NCAA outdoor track and field is in his third season of the two-region national qualification system. The top 48 athletes in each event qualify for the NCAA Preliminary Rounds, which are split between the East and West Regions. The Preliminary Round sites host the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships qualifying rounds of the field events and the opening rounds through semifinals of track events (depending on the event distance). In the first year of the system in 2010, Idaho had eight women and five men qualify for the NCAA West Preliminary Round. Last season, five women and four men qualified. This year’s NCAA West Preliminary will be hosted by the University of Texas at Austin, Texas.

Colle Breaks Through
Senior Stéphane Colle ran a career-best 14:05.03 in the 5000m at the Mt. SAC Relays on April 19. His time is the fastest by a Vandal in 30 years and ranks second in Idaho school history. It’s also the fastest by a Western Athletic Conference runner since 2006 and gives Colle a No. 9 all-time ranking for his home province of Quebec, Canada. He’s not far off Idaho’s record of 14:03.29 by Andy Harvey in 1982 - the second-oldest record in Vandal men’s outdoor history.
