(Kansas City, Mo.)  - The UMKC women's track & field team was selected to finish fifth and the men's team sixth in The Summit League Preseason Poll in a vote by the league's head coaches, it was announced today.  The 'Roos, who finished fifth on the men's side and sixth on the women's side in last season's championship, received 28 and 47 points respectively in the polls.

Both the men's and the women's squad return an individual champion from a season ago, as Cosmas Ayabei will look to defend his title in the 10,000 meter, while Kimoya Harriott will try to do the same in the Javelin.

North Dakota State, the four-time defending women's champion and two-time defending men's champion, were voted the preseason favorites to repeat as Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Champions in a vote of the league's 10 head coaches.

In the men's poll the Bison edged out Southern Utah by one point for the top spot with 60 points and five first-place votes as the Thunderbirds tallied 59 points and the final four first-places votes. Oral Roberts finished third with 50 points, while only three points separated South Dakota State (42 points) and league newcomer, South Dakota (39 points) in fourth and fifth.  Rounding out the men's poll were UMKC (28 points), Western Illinois (23 points), Oakland (15 points) and IUPUI (eight points).

On the women's side, North Dakota State collected 91 points and nine first-place votes atop the poll, followed by Southern Utah in second with 67 points and South Dakota in third with 65 points and the final first-place vote.  South Dakota State claimed fourth with a total of 60 points, while UMKC (47 points) and Oral Roberts (45 points) finished in a tight race for fifth and sixth, respectively.  Western Illinois (34 points), Oakland (25 points), IPFW (15 points) and IUPUI (11 points) rounded out the women's poll.

A combined total of 16 individual league champions return, eight men's and eight women's, highlighted by three All-Americans, and five multi-event champions.

On the men's side, Oral Roberts and Southern Utah each welcome back two event champions and are the only two teams with returning USTFCCCA All-Americans.  The Golden Eagles bring back league champions in Jeffery Gibson (400 meters, 400-meter hurdles) and All-American Jack Whitt (pole vault). Also returning for ORU is All-American Clive Chafausipo (long jump), while the Thunderbirds return event champion and All-American Cameron Levins (1,500 meters, 5,000 meters) and Cody Olsen (javelin).  The Bison also welcome back two league champions in Matt Tetzlaff (110-meter hurdles) and Casey Orgon (hammer throw).
