After an outstanding performance last Sunday at the Oregon Preview to kick off the 2012 outdoor track and field season, Zach Stanfield (Adna, Wash.) has been named the Great West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Male Athlete of the Week, announced Friday by the conference office.

Stanfield won the 200 meter dash with a time of 21.89 seconds, the only competitor to break the 22-second barrier in the event. He also finished second overall in the 400 meter dash with a time of 48.88 seconds and anchored the 4x100 meter relay team to a fourth-place finish with a time of 42.60 seconds.

"Coming off his redshirt during the indoor season, Zach started the outdoor season off in the right direction. Winning the 200 meters at Historic Hayward Field will propel Zach onto having a stellar outdoor season that should culminate with his name all over the school records board at season's end," assistant Seattle U track and field coach Chad Pharis said.

Stanfield won the 400 meter dash at the 2011 Great West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, plus he earned two individual and two team top-four finishes at the 2010 Great West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He owns the school record in the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash, plus he is part of the school record relay quartet in the 4x100 meter relay.

The Seattle University track and field team returns to competition next weekend, participating in the Willamette Invitational in Salem, Ore., Friday and Saturday, March 30-31. On those same days, certain members of the squad will head north for the Western Washington Multi-Events Meet in Bellingham, Wash.
