Akron, OH - The eighth-seeded Toledo softball team lost to fifth-seeded Western Michigan, 8-0, in the opening round of the 2012 MAC softball tournament on Wednesday, May 9. Played at Firestone Stadium, the home of the Akron Racers, UT was only able to generate two hits in its first post-season appearance since 1997.
Both teams went three-up-three down in the first inning, before Western Michigan lit up the scoreboard first with a two-out solo homerun by second baseman Diana Patterson in the second. The Broncos added four more runs in the fourth inning off of three hits and two errors to grow their lead to 5-0.
The Rockets (18-37) threatened in the top of the sixth inning, when Allissa Turkovich singled through the left side and Brooke Gates walked. The opportunity came to an abrupt end, however, when Alyssa Smith popped out to third base, Turkovich was picked off at second base and pinch-hitter Courtney McCarthy struck out swinging.
WMU added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to walk off with an 8-0 win.
As the tournament is double-elimination, Toledo will play again on Thursday, May 10 at 1:30 p.m as they take on rival Bowling Green. Live stats will be available at www.mac-sports.com.
