CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga Mocs men's golf team is closer to returning to campus - classes start August 20. But until they do, here is an update of their summer activity:
Fox Qualifies for U.S. Amateur
Steven Fox (Hendersonville, Tenn.) is currently ranked No. 140 in the world. He had ascended to as high as No. 100 prior to his round of 16 finish at the U.S. Amateur Public Links and tie for 60th at the Southern Am.
He earned a spot in the U.S. Amateur finishing second in the local qualifier at Willow Creek Golf Club in Knoxville, Tenn. Fox's 36-hole total of 137 (-7) was one shot off the pace set by Chattanooga native Keith Mitchell. The Am is August 13-19 at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.
Davis Bunn (Knoxville, Tenn.) earned second alternate at the qualifier. Bunn shot five-under par 139 missing a playoff for the last spot by a single shot.
Chris Robb Makes Third Round of Scottish
Chris Robb (Aberdeenshire, Scotland) made it to the third round of the Scottish Amateur Championship before falling to 2&1 to Charlie MacNeal (Louisville). He opened with a 6&5 win over Mark Thomson before a second round 3&2 triumph over Douglas Thorburn. The event was played at Royal Dornoch in Dornoch on the North Sea in the northern part of Scotland.
Weilguni Top 20 at German Am
Benni Weilguni (Langenlois, Austria) tied for 20th at the German International Amateur (July 19-22). The event was played at Golfenlage Green Eagle in Winsen/Luhe, Germany.
Three Entered in Tennessee Am
Three Mocs will try their hand at capturing the Tennessee Amateur. This year's event, the 97th, is August 7-10 at Cherokee Country Club in Knoxville.
Bunn will be joined by senior Alex Ratliff (Kingsport, Tenn.) and freshman Kory Webb (Knoxville, Tenn.). The trio is trying to become the first UTC golfer since Derek Rende at Ridgeway C.C., in 2008 to win the event.
Since the program's move to DI in 1977-78, Chris Byrd (1982) and Thomas Smith (2006) are the only other Mocs to win the event, although both were off the Chattanooga roster at the time of the win. Byrd's last season was 1981-82, while Smith finished up in 2004-05.
A current collegian has won the Tennessee Am four of the last five years.
