LEWISTON -- The Idaho women's tennis team got its 2012 spring season started the exact same way it did in 2011, with a 7-0 victory over Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston in the season opener Monday afternoon.
Victoria Lozano and Beatriz Flores knocked off the NAIA's No. 11 ranked doubles paring 8-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Alejandra Lozano teamed up with Molly Knox and Sophie Vickers and Almudena Sanz got together for 8-2 victories at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles
"Doubles was really strong," first-year Idaho women's tennis coach Daniel Pollock said. "We came out really quickly out of the blocks which was a positive because with the first match of the season we expect them to be a little bit slow. We won at number 1 doubles against the No. 11 team in NAIA and won 8-1, which was great, and the other two teams played really well."
Singles play was awfully similar to the doubles competition. Victoria Lozano won her No. 1 singles match in three sets, 7-6, 5-7, 10-5, while the other five singles matches were decided in straight sets in Idaho's favor.
"In singles we just kept that momentum," Pollock said. "Number 1 was a battle because it was against the No. 10 player in the nation in NAIA, but Vicky pulled out a win against her in three sets and the rest put away their opponents pretty quickly, it was really good to see."
Pollock was happy with his team's showing Monday, and is optimistic the team can carry that momentum into their match later this week against neighboring Washington State.
"Hopefully all the nerves are out now," Pollock said. "They should be pretty confident, they all played really well. Fingers crossed we can play like that again Thursday and see what we can do against WSU."
Thursday's match begins at 2 p.m. in Pullman, Wash.
