HENDERSON, Nev. – University of Idaho freshman Sean McMullen came within one stroke of the Rio Secco Golf Club course record when he opened Western Athletic Conference tournament play with a seven-under 65 to take a three-stroke lead into Tuesday’s second of three rounds.

McMullen’s score – one off Tiger Woods’ course record, helped the Vandals into a tie for first along with Fresno State. Both are at one-under 287 over the par-72, 7,313-yard desert layout. San Jose State is three strokes back at two-over 290 followed by New Mexico State (293), Utah State (294), Nevada (301), Hawai`i (304) and Louisiana Tech (304).

Vandal senior Jarred Bossio joins McMullen in the top five with a tie for fourth at two-under 70. Senior Justin Kadin is tied for 20th at three-over 75 with senior Stefan Richardson tied for 25th (77) and senior Gordon Webb tied for 34th (81).

McMullen opened his phenomenal round with a birdie followed by pars on the next four holes. He then had a run of three successive birdies before a par on the ninth hole put him at four-under 32 at the turn. His only bobble of the day was a bogey at the 478-yard, par-4 11th but he came back with another run of three successive birdies to drop to six under. He notched his eighth birdie of the round on the 516-yard, par-5 17 and then parred the final hole for his 65.

Bossio made the turn at even-par 36 after two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine. He dropped to one-under with a birdie on the 329-yard, par-4 13th and wrapped up his first round with a birdie on the 634-yard, par-5 18th.

Play resumes Tuesday and concludes Wednesday.
