Every third Thursday of each month, Idaho Director of Athletics Dr. Rob Spear will post a new blog entry directed towards Vandal fans. Dr. Spear will use these monthly communiqués to set the record straight and talk to you – Vandal to Vandal..

Other than the graduation of our student-athletes, one of the things that I am most proud of is our consistent competitive improvement as a member of the Western Athletic Conference.
Propelled by our conference championships in women’s cross country and men’s indoor track and field, the University of Idaho currently is third in the WAC Commissioner’s Cup race. The WAC awards its Commissioner's Cup to the school that performs the best in each of the conference's 19 men's and women's championships. Points are awarded in order of finish, equal to the number of teams that participate in each sport, and are averaged between a team’s regular-season finish (if applicable) and its WAC championship finish. With high expectations for all of our spring sports – men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, and men’s and women’s tennis, we are on target for our best finish as a member of the WAC.
Given the recent success our men’s and women’s track and field teams during the WAC Indoor Championships, we are thrilled to host our first WAC track championship May 8-10 at the Dan O’Brien Track and Field Complex. I know our student-athletes are excited to perform on their own track and in front of their hometown fans. It should be an action-packed four days!
Speaking of Dan O’Brien, he will be on campus May 7 to help us re-dedicate our newly refurbished track and field complex. The re-dedication is at 11 a.m. at the track and field complex and will celebrate the complete renovation that was accomplished over the last year. By investing $2.5 million into this track, we have created one of the best outdoor track and field complexes in the Northwest.
While we are proud of our competitive improvement and facility upgrades, our continued improvement is predicated on our ability to continue to improve facilities and to support our student-athletes as they represent the Vandal Silver and Gold.
