POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Marist Athletics Department and seventh-year head coach Tom Hanna announced the 2012 volleyball schedule on Monday. The Red Foxes will play a 28-match slate with 13 contests played at McCann Arena, including the return of the Volley in the Valley tournament on Sept. 1-2.
The Red Foxes open up at the Hofstra Asics Invitational Aug. 24-25. They will play Providence in their first match on Friday before taking on tournament host Hofstra and Farleigh Dickinson on Saturday.
The first home matches of the year will take place the following weekend when NJIT, Fordham and Hartford come to Poughkeepsie for the Volley in the Valley. Marist will play NJIT and Hartford on Saturday. Last season, the Red Foxes defeated both the Highlanders, 3-0 at the West Point Challenge, and the Hawks, 3-2 in Hartford. They will close out the tournament on Sunday versus Fordham.
The team will take a break from tournament play with a single home match on Wednesday, Sept. 5 versus Army. They Red Foxes travelled to Army last year for the West Point Challenge, falling to the Black Knights 3-0.
Marist heads south to Arlington, Texas for the Maverick Classic Sept. 7-8 to close out non-conference play. They open Friday against host Texas-Arlington before taking on Southern Mississippi and Northwestern State on Saturday.
The 18-match Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) schedule begins Saturday, Sept. 15 when Canisius comes to McCann Arena. The two teams split a pair of 3-0 decisions last season, with each winning on their home floor. Three-time defending MAAC champion Niagara comes in the next day, Sunday, Sept. 16 to close the weekend. The Purple Eagles swept Marist last year, although the Red Foxes took them to five sets in Poughkeepsie.
The Red Foxes will play at Manhattan on Saturday, Sept. 22 and at Saint Peter's on Sunday, Sept. 23. They split with the Jaspers in 2011 while sweeping the Peacocks, who finished 0-30 on the season.
Fairfield comes in for a midweek matchup on Wednesday, Sept. 26. The Stags, who fell in the MAAC Championship last season, swept Marist during the regular season. The two teams went to five sets in their match in McCann Arena.
Marist will kick off a three-match road trip, travelling to Siena for a Saturday, Sept. 29 contest, their only match of the weekend. The Saints swept the Red Foxes last season, on their way to earning a three-seed in the MAAC Tournament.
October begins with a match at Iona on Saturday, Oct. 6. The Red Foxes swept a pair of 3-0 decisions from the Gaels last year. They will then travel to Fairfield to close out the weekend and the season series with the Stags on Sunday, Oct. 7.

A four-match home-stand kicks off with a midweek matchup against Iona on Wednesday, Oct. 24. Saint Peter's and Manhattan come to town the following weekend, Oct. 27-28. Siena wraps up the home-stand, and the Red Foxes' 2012 home slate with a match on Saturday, Nov. 3.
Marist closes out their regular season on the road with a trip to Loyola (Md.) and Rider on the weekend of Nov. 10-11.
The 2012 MAAC Tournament will be hosted by Fairfield. The semifinals will take place on Friday, Nov 16 with the championship match being played on Sunday, Nov. 18.
"I am excited to have 13 home matches this season, including the return of our Volley in the Valley tournament," Hanna said. "We have played well at home over the last few seasons and hope that we can make McCann a home court advantage for us this year.
"Our non-conference schedule will have us well prepared for the MAAC season. We will be facing teams that should be similar to the top teams in the conference, along with a few teams that are traditionally stronger than what we will see in MAAC play. I think we have a well-balanced schedule this season."
The Red Foxes are coming off of a 2011 season that saw them finish with a 13-15 overall record and 10-8 in the MAAC. They just missed the MAAC Tournament, tying for fourth in the conference. Canisius won the tie-breaker, by scoring the point differential matchup in the teams' two head-to-head meetings, and received the final playoff spot.
