UNI Tops Ashford in Final Exhibition

The University of Northern Iowa women's soccer team was victorious in their final exhibition match versus Ashford on Tuesday night, beating the Saints 3-0.  The game was played in three 30-minute periods. 

The Panthers got on the board in the 26th minute when freshman Maggie Riley hit a corner kick that fellow freshman Sarah McHugh headed in for the score. 

The Panthers tacked on another score in the 42nd minute when senior Kiki McClellan fired a long-distance shot that beat the Ashford goalkeeper for the goal. 

UNI put the finishing touches on the match in the 85th minute when senior Melissa Hagan hit a cross pass that sophomore Charlotte Jones put in the back of the net. 

UNI outshot Ashford 28 to eight in the match.  10 Panther shots were on goal including two by Melissa Hagan, and one each from senior Kiki McClellan, juniors Grace Schield, Sam Copley, Claire Clark, and Elizabeth Rodriguez, sophomore Charlotte Jones, and freshmen Sarah McHugh and Maddie Welch. 

UNI registered nine corner kicks to Ashford's zero. 

Hagan, fellow senior Ashley Capone, and junior Sam Copley each tallied three shots on the night to lead the Panther offensive attack.  Seniors Kelsey Dolder and Kiki McClellan, sophomore Charlotte Jones, and freshman Maddie Welch each recorded two shots a-piece in the match. Juniors Allie Brees, Claire Clark, Grace Schield, and Elizabeth Rodriguez, sophomores Shauna Happel, Caitlyn Fuller, and Katherine Young, and freshmen Sarah McHugh, Maggie Riley, Annie Dale, and Rachel Carney each chipped in with a shot in the match. 

UNI used a new goalkeeper for each period.  Junior Erin Zaideman earned the starting nod and kept Ashford off the scoreboard for the first 30 minutes.  Zaideman was replaced at the start of the second period by junior Nicole Postel.  Postel recorded one save and kept the Saints scoreless through the period.  Freshman Whitney Blunt handled the third and final period tallying one save and completing the shutout. 

Ashford split time between two keepers during the match.  Jerika Castillo recorded 45 minutes tallying three saves while allowing two goals.  Castillo was replaced by Jessica VanDyke who allowed one goal while turning away four Panther shots. 

The Panthers will return to action and kick-off their regular season on Fri., Aug. 17 vs. North Dakota.  First kick is set for 7:00 p.m. at the Cedar Valley Soccer Complex.
