CULLOWHEE, N.C. - College of Charleston senior Kristen Wolfe and sophomore Dena O'Brien highlighted the first day of competition for the College of Charleston women's track & field team as they each won individual events to open the 2012 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championship at the Catamount Athletic Complex.

The Cougars are currently in fifth-place in the team competition with 24 points.

Wolfe successfully defended her title from last year in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as she came from behind in the last 100-meters to win the event in a season best time of 10:48.26. Her time is the second fastest in school history.

Wolfe was coming off an impressive performance an hour and a half before the race as she also qualified for the final of the 400-meter hurdles of a personal record time of 1:03.92, the seventh-fastest time in school history.

Sophomore Dena O'Brien started the meet on a high note for the Cougars as she set a school record with a first-place finish in the 10,000-meter run in 35:55.44. Her time shattered the previous school of 38:38.99, set by Ashley Arnold at the Raleigh Relays on March 24, 2006.

After narrowly making the finals of the javelin in the ninth position, sophomore Christine Klinar made the most of her opportunity, throwing a personal best mark of 38.46-meters to finish in fifth-place and improve on her school record.

Senior Alyssa D'Orazio qualified for the finals in the 800-meter run and she ran the second fastest time in school history in 2:11.98 and finished second in her section of the race.

The Cougars resume competition tomorrow as some athletes will compete for the first time and others will have finals in their event. To follow the meet with live results tomorrow click here.
