DURHAM, N.C. – As the 2019-20 women’s college golf season gets set to kick off, AmateurGolf.com has presented a list of the best freshmen nationally with two Duke rookies making the list. Megan Furtney and Erica Shepherd were among 15 freshmen mentioned in a recent article by Julie Williams.
The Duke duo arrive in Durham as United States Golf Association (USGA) champions as they claimed the 2019 U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship in April. Furtney and Shepherd combined to win five AJGA titles, total 38 AJGA top 10 finishes, and three USGA Championships.
Furtney, a product of St. Charles, Ill., carded 17 career AJGA top 10 finishes along with 28 top 25 placements. She collected three AJGA titles and notched 11 rounds in the 60s on the AJGA.
Shepherd, who hails from Greenwood, Ind., posted two USGA Championships as she won the 2017 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship along with the Four-Ball title. She also notched two AJGA victories along with 21 top 10 finishes over the last five years.
The Blue Devils have been tabbed No. 2 nationally in both the Golfweek and Women’s Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) preseason polls. Shepherd was tabbed Third Team All-America by Golfweek in its preseason honors list.
Duke will open the 2019-20 campaign Sept. 16-18 at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate in Lake Elmo, Minn.
