SAAC 2014-2015 Year-In-Review
Under the leadership of President Mattie Fowler, the Nebraska Student-Athlete Advisory Committee enjoyed a productive year making an impact at the institutional, conference and national level. With outstanding support from officers Ian Ousley, Jacqueline Juffer, Alex Bilunas and Lotte Sjulin. The 2014-15 year kicked off with a retreat featuring inspirational speaker Mike Smith of Lincoln. Smith challenged SAAC to further develop leadership skills and to continue making an impact by serving the community of Lincoln. SAAC also enjoyed a strong connection with members of the Athletic Department Senior Management Team (SMT). Each SMT member attended two SAAC meetings throughout the year providing updates while gaining student-athlete perspective on a regular basis. SAAC officers also met periodically with Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst and SMT members for luncheons throughout the academic year discussing student-athlete welfare issues, legislation, national trends and hot topics. Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst also addressed the SAAC group in person providing following-up to an annual feedback shared by the entire student-athlete population. SAAC leadership also met periodically with Faculty Athletics Representative Jo Potuto to discuss NCAA Autonomy as well as student-athlete representation at the national level. SAAC also worked with Potuto on the completion of a Big Ten Time Demands survey. SAAC continues to have representation on the Intercollegiate Athletic Committee ensuring regular communication and updates with faculty advocates. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee supported numerous community initiatives highlighted by participation in the Souper Bowl of Caring Food Drive and Soles 4 Souls Shoe Drive as well as holiday outreach.
