NEW YORK – The Columbia fencing team will look to remain one of the nation’s premier programs during the 2014-15 campaign, as head coach Michael Aufrichtig has announced the Lions schedule for the upcoming season this afternoon.
Led by captains Harry Bergman, Michael Josephs and Will Spear on the men’s side and Jackie Dubrovich, Suzy Freeman, and Natalie Gegan guiding the women’s squad, the Lions will take the strip against the nation’s best this season.
After the Alumni Meet Oct. 26, the season gets underway Nov. 14 when Columbia welcomes Fairleigh Dickinson, Florida, Princeton and Stevens to Morningside Heights for the Columbia Invitational.
The Lions return to action after the holidays at the Penn State Invitational Jan. 17. Columbia will take the defending national champion’s strip against Duke, Drew, Haverford, North Carolina and Temple.
A week later, Columbia stays local as it makes the short trek to Queens Jan. 24 for the St. John’s Super Cup, which features the heavyweights of the fencing world; Harvard, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Penn State and St. John’s. A day later, the Lions square off against North Carolina, Northwestern, Notre Dame, Ohio State, St. John’s and Wayne State at the NYU Invitational.
Columbia concludes the regular season at NYU’s Historical Meet Feb. 10. The Lions will be joined in the four-team meet by Sacred Heart, Vassar and the hosts’, the Violets.
On March 8 Columbia heads back to Greenwich Village to start its post season run at the NCAA Northeast Regionals. The Lions will then look to send its top fencers to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio, March 19-22.
