NEW YORK – The #37 Columbia men’s tennis team had a 12-match win streak snapped in New Haven Saturday afternoon, in an epic battle with Yale that lasted over five hours. The Bulldogs came out on the better end of the fight, edging the Lions by a narrow score of 4-3. It was the first loss in Ivy League play for Columbia.
The match started off well for the Lions, as a duo of first-years upset a nationally ranked opponent to score first. Max Schnur and Ashok Narayana beat #80 Daniel Hoffman and Marc Powers with ease in the No.1 doubles spot, 8-2. But Yale evened the score moments later, as Erik Blumenkranz and Joel Samaha beat juniors John Yetimoglu and Nathaniel Gery 8-3 in the No.3 spot.
With the doubles point up for grabs, the match came down to the No.2 spot, where senior Haig Schneiderman and first-year Winston Lin were battling with John Huang and Patrick Chase. The pair stayed on serve until the end, forcing a tiebreaker. The Lions came out on top 9-8, taking the doubles point and a 1-0 lead on the Bulldgos.
But singles squelched Columbia’s momentum early on. Blumenkranz had a quick win over Narayana in the No.4 spot, beating him 6-2, 6-0 to tie the team score up, 1-1. Columbia got the edge again when first-year Winston Lin won his 18th match of the season, beating Powers at No.2, 6-3, 6-4., to give the Lions the 2-1 lead.
Yale got back in the game almost right away, as Huang beat Schnierman in the top singles spot, 6-3, 6-4. And the Bulldogs took a lead in the team match shortly after, as Kyle Dawson downed Yetimoglu, 6-4, 6-3 at No.5. Yale had its first lead of the day, 3-2. But it would not last long, as sophomore Tizian Bucher evened the match up at 3-3, beating Zach Krumholz in a three-set battle, 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
The match came down to the No.3 singles spot, where Hoffman and Gery were facing off. Hoffman had taken the first set, 6-4, but Gery had staged a fantastic rally to win the second set, 7-6, and force a third set. Gery was up a break there, but started cramping, and Hoffman was able to rally and win the third set, 6-4. With his win there, Hoffman clinched the upset win for the Bulldogs, 4-3. With the loss, the Lions are now 16-3 this season, 3-1 in the Ivy League.
Columbia continues Ivy League play Sunday in Providence, R.I., as they will face off against Brown. First serve is slated for 2 p.m.
