BOXSCORE

A 26-7 scoring run by Saint Mary’s in the final 10:45 of the first half gave the Gaels and 42-25 half time lead and an eventual 77-54 win over the Weber State Wildcats, Friday night in Moraga, California. It was the final regular season game for both teams.

Forwards Rob Jones and Clint Steindl each scored 13 first half points to pace the Gael. It was a three-pointer from Jones, with 10:03 left in the first half, which ignited the scoring run. Jones finished the game with 20 points while Steindl did not score a point in the second half.  Mickey McConnell scored 15 points, dished out eight assists and had three steals for the Gaels, who improved to 25-8 on the season. Saint Mary’s is expected to receive an At-Large berth into the 2011 NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament this Sunday.

For the second straight game, the Wildcats had just one player in double figure scoring. Last Tuesday night vs. Montana it was Scott Bamforth (10). On Friday it was Trevor Morris. He scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds in 29 minutes. Lindsey Hughey had nine points and Byron Fulton, eight.  Darin Mahoney tied his career high with nine rebounds.

The Wildcats move to 18-13 overall, but the season is still not over.  WSU has committed to play in the COLLEGE BASKETBALL INVITATIONAL, sponsored by ZEBRA PEN.  The 16-team tournament begins with first round games this coming Tuesday (March 15) and Wednesday (March 16).  The Wildcats have been given a HOME GAME in the first round.  The complete field, and pairing, will be announced on Sunday, March 13 shortly after 7:00 p.m. (MST).
