KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Arkansas baseball team closes the regular season this weekend as it travels to Knoxville, Tenn., to face the Tennessee Volunteers in a three-game series. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 3 p.m. on Saturday.
All three games of the series will be streamed online for free on UTSports.com. The three games of this weekend’s series will also be available on the Razorback Baseball Radio Network from IMG. Three-time Arkansas Sportscaster of the Year Chuck Barrett will call the action.
The Razorbacks played their final non-conference game of the regular season on Tuesday, defeating Louisiana Tech 6-5 in 10 innings at Dickey-Stephens Park in North Little Rock. Matt Reynolds
tied a career high with four hits, including his sixth homer of the season, and added three RBI and three runs scored, including scoring the game-winning run in the 10th inning. Tim Carver
added three hits in the victory, while Brian Anderson
and Bo Bigham
each had two hits.
Arkansas enters the final weekend of the regular season with a 36-17 overall record and a 13-14 mark in league play. The Razorbacks are currently tied for third in the SEC Western Division. Arkansas has already clinched a spot in next week’s SEC Tournament. Last weekend, the Razorbacks dropped two of three games at home against Auburn.
Arkansas is hitting .279 as a team, which is sixth in the SEC. Reynolds leads the Razorbacks at the plate and is currently riding a 36-game streak of reaching base consecutively and a nine-game hitting streak. For the season, Reynolds is hitting a team-leading .350 with six homers and a team-best 37 RBI. Carver is batting .325 with two homers, 24 RBI and 12 stolen bases, while Dominic Ficociello
has a .318 batting average with six round trippers and 36 RBI.
The Razorback pitching staff compiled a team ERA of 3.13, ranking them third in the league. Junior right hander DJ Baxendale
will start the series opener on Thursday. Baxendale has a 6-3 record with a 3.48 ERA in 14 starts. Sophomore right hander Ryne Stanek
will get the nod for Friday’s game. Stanek is 6-3 with a 2.99 ERA in 12 starts. Stanek ranks 12th in the conference in ERA. Arkansas has not announced a starter for Saturday’s series finale.
has pitched in a team-high 26 games, 23 in relief, and has a 3-5 record with nine saves and a 2.37 ERA. Colby Suggs
has appeared in 25 games out of the bullpen and is 5-0 with a 1.21 ERA. Brandon Moore
is 4-2 with saves and a 2.61 ERA in 21 appearances. Moore currently ranks sixth in the SEC in ERA. Cade Lynch
has pitched in 20 games and is 2-1 with two saves and a 2.27 ERA.
Tennessee has a 24-28 overall record and an 8-19 mark in league play. The Volunteers are currently sixth in the SEC Eastern Division. UT has dropped its last four games, including an 11-4 loss to Memphis on Tuesday. Last weekend, the Vols were swept in a three-game series at Ole Miss.
The Volunteers are hitting .251 as a team, which is 11th in the conference. Will Maddox is hitting a team-best .299 with two homers and 19 RBI. Davis Morgan is batting .290 with two homers and 20 RBI, while Chris Pierce is hitting .270 with two home runs and 24 RBI. Drew Steckenrider has hit a team-leading six homers, while Chris Fritts leads the team with 27 RBI.
Tennessee has a team ERA of 4.42, which ranks 11th in the SEC. The Volunteers will start sophomore left hander Dalton Saberhagen on Thursday. Saberhagen is 5-2 with a 3.12 ERA in 22 appearances, including two starts. Sophomore right hander Nick Williams will take the mound on Friday. Williams has a 3-4 record with three saves and a 3.61 ERA in 21 appearances, including 11 starts. In the series finale on Saturday, junior right hander Zack Godley will get the nod. Godley is 4-2 with a 3.50 ERA in 11 appearances, with 10 of those being starts.
Steckenrider leads the Volunteer pitching staff with 26 appearances on the season. Steckenrider has a 4-6 record with one save and a 3.06 ERA. Robbie Kidd has pitched in 20 games, 13 in relief, and is 2-3 with a 4.77 ERA. Connor Stevens has compiled a 1-1 record with a 3.86 ERA in 19 outings.
Arkansas and Tennessee have met 49 times previously with the Razorbacks holding a narrow 25-24 edge in the series. The Volunteers have won 15 of the 25 meetings in Knoxville. The two teams have not met since the 2009 regular season when the Razorbacks won two of three games in the series in Knoxville.
