We are looking for dedicated and competitive individuals to join our winning team! UCSD Men’s Rowing is consistently one of the top programs in the country and we do it all with walk-on student-athletes with no prior rowing experience.
UCSD Rowing is not a club sport. We are part of the Intercollegiate Athletics Department, so you will receive all the benefits and expectations of being a student-athlete. By joining UCSD Rowing, you will have the opportunity to travel and compete against the best schools in the nation. Moreover, you will compete at the Division I level against teams such as Cal, Washington, Michigan, Ohio State, Stanford, Penn and Harvard. On top of that you will win! No rowing experience is necessary!
What about academics and not having enough time?
With the structured environment of being a student-athlete, you will find your life is more organized, thus freeing up time to enjoy the college experience. Last season, 27 of our 38 student-athletes made the Athletic Directors Honor Roll after achieving over a 3.0 cumulative GPA. Our overall team GPA was two points higher than UCSD's general student body. All team members receive priority registration to accommodate our practice schedule. For the fall quarter, do your best to schedule NO 8:00 a.m. classes!
Who can join?
Anyone can join. Although the typical oarsmen is over six feet tall, our 2009 Varsity 8 was ranked in the top 25 in the nation and had three athletes under 5’9” and weighing only 160 pounds. If you are a top-level athlete, you can compete in crew.
Our first team meeting for the 2013-14 season is Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at 8:00 p.m. in the Green Room at RIMAC Arena. Physicals and a basic swim test will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2013, at 8:15 am. Tryouts will be held starting the following week. If you have any questions please contact head coach Jeff Collett at 858.246.0728 or email@example.com.
