Spirit Squad Tryout Process
Tryout prep clinics will be held for interested cheerleaders and dancers to participate in to get a better idea of what we look for in choosing participants for our team throughout the year. These clinics are not mandatory and a fee will be charged.
Tryouts will consist of a 2-3 day weekend evaluation/cut process where the material presented via a social media post prior to tryouts, will be evaluated in person. There will be cuts throughout the tryout weekend until approximately 18 -24 cheer couples/dancers are chosen. See each sample itinerary for cheer and Tiger Girls.
*Candidates that are competing in a national cheerleading or dance team championship may request to tryout via video which will be judged during the 3 day tryout. Current coach must send confirmation that this commitment is accurate, please include in tryout application. Additional selections may or may not be made from individuals that are in this situation. Invitations to PHASE 2 may or may not be extended to these candidates.
Step: 1 Contact Pauline Zernott- Spirit Director firstname.lastname@example.org to get approval.
Step: 2 Send video with most difficult standing tumbling, running tumbling, partner stunts
Step: 3 Learn tryout material from Video's posted on LSU Cheerleading Facebook page, video yourself performing it and include with Step 2. This video can be emailed to email@example.com.
Step: 4 Spirit Squad Application must be MAILED and received by Wednesday before tryout weekend. Tryout packets can also be dropped off at the LSU Athletic Admin Building, N. Stadium & Nicholson Dr, there is a drop off basket on the 4th floor.
There will be a 2 day evaluation with a cut if needed followed by 2-3 days of practice and UCA camp in July.
There will be a weeklong practice the week prior to the start of school. If additional cuts are warranted they will be made during this phase. Cuts during the 2 & 3 phases will be based on the person's ability to maintain their performance level as well as final decisions on the person's ability to work with their peers and coaches.
How can I prepare for LSU Cheerleading tryouts?
We are looking for a well-rounded individual. First and foremost an outgoing personality as well as good character is very important. The LSU cheerleaders are highly visible within our community and therefore must be able to represent the University in a positive way. Grades and how well you work with our coaches will also be considered at tryouts. Good collegiate style motions, tumbling and co-ed stunts are also equally as important. Commitment to a full year of participation is mandatory. We start in April with tryouts, we meet a few times over the summer to prepare for the upcoming season, we start formal practices in mid-August and games begin in September. We cheer Volleyball, Football, Men's and Women's Basketball, Gymnastics and Beach Volleyball. In addition, we participate in additional athletic department events and campus and community service activities during the year.
Tumbling: Standing back tucks and standing back handspring tucks are the norm for our squad. Running tumbling ranges. Most girls have layouts and full twist or a specialty pass. The guys range from no running tumbling to specialty passes. Typically, the first thing we do at tryouts is a standing tumbling cut for the girls. Depending on the number of males we have at tryouts, a standing tumbling cut is possible. Both girls and guys have a first round motion cut so it is important to also have good collegiate style motions. Jumps are not performed.
Coed Stunts: Local cheer gyms and college squads are good resources for private co-ed stunt lessons. Our gold squad members typically have full up stunts, rewinds and handspring up stunts. Purple squad members have basic stunts such as extensions, liberties, walk-in stunts as well as toss stunts. Being able to stunt with multiple stunt partners and not just one person is a necessity. When we are choosing our team, we consider who is easy to work with and can be used with different partners. We also consider if the person can easily make corrections.
Motions: If you do not cheer on a high school squad and you are on a competitive team only, please consider getting a private coach to assist you with "game day" cheerleading. Being talented is important but you must also know how to "lead a crowd" and cheer in front of fans, not just judges. Yelling loud with natural collegiate cheering expressions, sharp motions and good motion placement is very important.
We do not have a weight or height restriction. Size ranges fluctuate from year to year.
Attending one of our spring one day clinics is helpful as you will gain an inside perspective on our tryout process. It is also a good idea to attend one of our games to see our cheerleaders in action. All portions of tryouts are closed to the public. Evaluators will consist of the coaches and athletic department staff members. The purpose of the tryout is to choose the best all-around representatives for LSU.
