KALAMAZOO, Mich.- The Western Michigan men’s basketball program held its inaugural Lary Blahnik Commemorative Golf Outing last Friday, June 24 at Angels Crossing Golf Club in Vicksburg, Mich. A total of 72 golfers teed up to make this year’s event a success, while others were on hand to enjoy the day and dinner following.

“We considered the golf outing a tremendous success,” said WMU head coach Steve Hawkins. “We were so happy to team up with the Blahnik family to honor Lary’s name. He has such a big part of our Bronco past.

“For our first year to have over 70 golfers was outstanding. We had several responses back from others who could not make it but are excited to attend in the future. I expect the field to grow in years to come.

“Special thanks to the sponsors and Angels Crossing. More than anything, it was just an overall great day and a great time to be part of the Bronco family.”

The winning foursome consisted of former men’s basketball player Andrew Hershberger as well as Marcus Brussee, Jake Rykse and Aaron Willson, firing a team total of 53 (19 under par). Other notable basketball alumni, including Joe Reitz, who will be entering his seventh season as a lineman with the Indianapolis Colts, participated in the event.

LARY BLAHNIK
Lary was a member of the Bronco men’s basketball team from 1980-84 and helped Western Michigan win the 1981 Mid-American Conference championship as a freshman. After finishing his time at WMU, Lary became a successful self-employed businessman, founding Midwest Enterprises with two former teammates and later owning and running Blahnik Builders and Blahnik Property Management.

Lary died tragically as a result of an automobile accident in July 2011, but his family has worked to ensure that his name will be forever associated with Western Michigan University. In 2011 his wife, Roseanne, and the rest of the Blahnik family established the Lary Blahnik Memorial Fund in Plainwell to fund a yearly scholarship for an incoming WMU freshman. In November 2015, the family made a donation to Western Michigan men’s basketball in Lary’s honor which will be used towards locker room renovations.
