DURHAM, N.C. – Throughout the summer, student-athletes participating in The Rubenstein-Bing Student-Athlete Civic Engagement Program are sharing reflections from their experiences abroad. This week, Duke and Stanford ACE participants team up to share their experiences from Peru.  


Meet Our Community Partners

Our ACE team provides additional hands to the environmental sustainability projects that local community leaders are working to accomplish. In addition, through the work of GVI and CBC, we are able to learn so much about ethical volunteering, how different communities work together to sustain their own environments, and appreciate a unique culture through positive relationships built upon years of shared experiences. Delving into the Foundation of the Culture of Pongobamba

Through interactions with both CBC and the Pongobamba community during our first week, we experienced firsthand different aspects of their culture. As a team, we attended a CBC water presentation, worked with community members to improve terraces for a greenhouse, learned about local textiles, were invited to lunch with community members, and joined a soccer game. Language Immersion

Talking to the kids for a whole day in Spanish was mentally challenging.  Yet, watching them happily play the games we prepared was so rewarding. As we introduced ourselves to each class, we described our distinct collegiate sports.  The most memorable moments for many of us were watching the kids try to mimic and understand our sports which were likely unfamiliar to them. 9PM Bedtime! By this time we are all mentally and physically exhausted, and ready to get a good night’s sleep. The altitude and busy schedule can be draining so it’s important to get plenty of sleep so we can prepare for the next day filled with more exercise, volunteering, and fun in the community. More
