DURHAM, N.C. – The 19th-ranked Duke women’s basketball team defeated Wake Forest, 59-51, Wednesday evening in Cameron Indoor Stadium. The Blue Devils improved to 19-6 overall and 8-4 in conference play, securing the fourth-straight victory against the Demon Deacons to lead the all-time series 66-17.

Fifth-year senior Lexie Brown once again headlined the Blue Devil offense with 20+ points for the 30th time in her career and 13th this season. Brown tallied 21 points as she was 7-of-15 from the floor, 2-of-6 from beyond the arc and was perfect (5-of-5) from the charity stripe. The Suwanee, Ga., native grabbed five boards to go along with four assists and four steals in 39 minutes. Brown continues to lead the ACC and ranks third in the nation with at least one three-pointer in 24-straight contests.

Fellow fifth-year senior Rebecca Greenwell added 13 points and led the team with eight rebounds in 38 minutes. With her 115th start as a Blue Devil, Greenwell is now tied for ninth on Duke’s all-time charts along with Georgia Schweitzer.

Wake Forest opened the contest with back-to-back treys in the first minute to force Duke into a timeout before Greenwell completed a three-point play to trail by one, 8-7, at 6:40. Brown followed in her fellow “Splash Sister’s” footsteps and notched a three-point play of her own for a 6-0 run. The Demon Deacons found their rhythm for a 9-0 run as Elisa Penna hit her first three of the evening with a hand in her face to end the first quarter leading 17-10.

Brown picked up her first steal of the game to allow Greenwell to connect on a fast break opportunity, good for Brown’s 91st of the season and 314th of her career. Brown notched her first trey of the evening to spark a 6-0 run as Duke took the lead, forcing a scoreless Wake Forest to call a timeout at 3:12. Penna continued to find range from beyond the arc with her third three to push the Demon Deacons ahead by one with just under two minutes to play in the first half.

Wake Forest led 28-27 at the half as Greenwell led the Blue Devils with 11, followed by Brown with eight.

Senior Erin Mathias opened the third frame with a block in the paint and ended with two, picking up her 30th of the season. The Blue Devils were unable to capitalize offensively for over two minutes until Brown found her second three of the night to cut Wake Forest’s lead to three. Heading into the final 10 minutes, Duke held a three-point advantage, 39-36.

The Demon Deacons scored at 5:38 of the third quarter as the Blue Devils defensive pressure kept them without another field goal until 6:06 in the fourth quarter.

Redshirt junior Sofia Roma came off the bench for Duke and had a solid showing in the fourth quarter with five points, four rebounds and one assist. The Blue Devils closed the contest shooting 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the floor to secure the win.

As a team, Duke shot 42.9 percent (21-of-49) from the field and added 34 points in the paint to Wake Forest’s 12.

Penna led the Demon Deacons with 23 points and seven rebounds.

The Blue Devils will hit the road to take on Clemson Sunday, Feb. 11. Tipoff is slated for 2 p.m., on ACC Network Extra.
