DURHAM, N.C. – Redshirt junior Nicolas Alvarez returned to his home country this week to take part in the Peru F1 Futures event, held in Lima, Peru. In a standout performance, Alvarez earned four singles victories and advanced to the championship match.

In the opening round, Alvarez defeated Antonio Pruner Neto 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the Round of 16, where he upset the draw's No. 3 seed Joao Pedro Sorgi 6-1, 6-2. Sorgi owns a current ATP singles ranking of No. 342 and reached as high as No. 251 earlier this year.

During the quarterfinals, Alvarez downed Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera, ranked No. 666 in the ATP ledger, 7-6 (6), 6-4. Barrios Vera was the Chile F3 Futures even earlier this year.

Alvarez then took down the draw's No. 8 seed Oscar Jose Gutierrez, No. 599 in the current ATP singles standings, 6-3, 7-5, in the semifinal.

The finals and No. 2 seed Daniel Elahi Galan handed Alvarez his only loss, a 7-5, 6-3 setback. Galan, ranked No. 321 by the ATP, reached as high as No. 237 last month.

Alvarez also played doubles at the Futures event, falling 7-5, 6-3 with Juan Pablo Varillas to Boris Arias and Federico Zeballos, the draw's No. 2 seed, in the first round.

Earlier this fall, Alvarez took part in the ATP World Tour Lima Challenger Copa Claro and earned his first career ATP victory.

In 2016, Alvarez helped his native Peru to a 3-2 victory against Venezuela in the championship match of the Davis Cup Group II Americas tournament in mid-September. He clinched the deciding point with a comeback 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (2), 6-1 victory against Luis David Martinez.

The Blue Devils kick off the dual match campaign on Saturday, January 13, 2018, in Scottsdale, Ariz., to face Arizona State.
