NORFOLK, Va. – Redshirt seniors Lexie Brown and Rebecca Greenwell combined for 50 points to send 16th-ranked Duke past Old Dominion, 84-51, Wednesday evening at the Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Va.
Brown turned in 10-of-15 shooting from the floor and a 4-of-6 performance for three while Greenwell went 8-of-10 from the floor and a nearly perfect 6-of-7 from behind the arc as the Blue Devils improved to 3-1 on the season.
Greenwell continued to move atop the ACC career records chart as she moved into tied for 16th with 240 made three-point field goals.
As a team, Duke tied the school record for most made three-pointers tonight with 13.
Greenwell registered her first three of the night from a Mikayla Boykin pass at the top of the key. Greenwell, who hails from Owensboro, Ky., also picked up an assist for a Brown three to end the first quarter with a 13-0 run, good for a 16-point lead and outrebounded the Monarchs 13-4.
Redshirt sophomore Haley Gorecki opened the second quarter with a three from downtown at the top of the key to extend the lead to 14 after Old Dominion picked up a quick two in the paint. Gorecki tallied her second three of the quarter from a nice pass from Brown before Greenwell drained her second trey from Gorecki. Heading into the half, the Blue Devils held a solid 20-point lead.
Going into the second half of action, Brown led all scorers with 10 followed by Greenwell and Gorecki each with eight.
Old Dominion opened the second half with a quick layup in the paint in the first 20 seconds before Brown picked up her second trey of the evening. Greenwell joined Brown from behind the arc to combine for 66.7 percent (4-of-6) in the third. With just under two minutes to play, the Blue Devils tallied their largest lead of the night at 33 points.
Brown and Greenwell combined for 38 points heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
Gorecki, who is from Palatine, Ill., tied a career-high with 11 points in 14 minutes of play as she went 3-for-5 from three-point land and rookies Madison Treece and Jade Williams, redshirt senior Bego Faz Davalos and senior Erin Mathias picked up blocks for the Blue Devils.
For the evening, Duke shot 44 percent (28-of-64) from the field, including a 65 percent mark from behind the arc (13-of-20). The squad also notched 17 points off turnovers, 17 fast break points and outrebounded the Lady Monarchs’, 48-36.
Victoria Morris headlined the Lady Monarchs’ offense with 15 points and Odegua Oigbokie and MaKayla Timmons each added 11.
In the last two meetings with Old Dominion, Brown combined to score 60 points against the Lady Monarchs.
Up next, the Blue Devils will return home after the holiday for matchups against No. 18 Oregon State on Saturday, Nov. 25 and Presbyterian Sunday, Nov. 26. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively, on ACC Network Extra.
