INDIAN WELLS, CALIF. – The Duke women’s tennis team finished out a strong second day of the ITA Fall Nationals with a pair of wins in both singles and doubles play.
Both of Duke’s singles wins on Thursday came against ranked opponents. Senior Samantha Harris moved into the Round of 16 in the main draw by knocking off Washington’s 18th-ranked Stacey Fun 6-1, 5-7, 6-3. Kelly Chen advanced to the Round of 16 in the consolation draw by beating Vanderbilt’s 47th-ranked Christina Rosca 7-5, 6-1. Junior Kaitlyn McCarthy bowed out of the singles main draw, falling to Oklahoma State’s 43rd-ranked Vladica Babic 6-1, 6-4.
The Blue Devils were perfect in doubles play as both Duke tandems advanced. Harris and Chen moved onto the quarterfinals of the main draw with a 6-4, 6-4 win over over Ole Miss’ Sabina Machalova and Natalie Suk. After losing for the first time in the fall, McCarthy and junior Ellyse Hamlin bounced back to beat Texas’ Marta Perez Mur and Dani Wagland 6-0, 6-4.
Harris will try to advance to the quarterfinals as she battles Denver’s Julia O’Laughlin on Friday while Chen will match up with Auburn’s 60th-ranked Taylor Russo in the consolation Round of 16. On the doubles side, Harris and Chen face off against Georgia’s 34th-ranked duo of Elena Christofi and Morgan Coppoc with a semifinal berth on the line. McCarthy and Hamlin will try to keep their consolation run going as well, as they play Florida International's Ulyana Grib and Maryna Veksler.
