RALEIGH, N.C. – Duke was unable to slow the Wolfpack’s ACC-leading offense, falling to NC State 3-0 (25-23, 27-25, 25-18) Sunday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum.

NC State (11-6, 6-0 ACC) totaled 48 kills to win its seventh straight match. Despite a double-double from senior outside hitter Cadie Bates, Duke (11-6, 3-3) could not match the Wolfpack in kills, compiling 39 while hitting .145.

“We started off executing pretty well,” said head coach Jolene Nagel. “We had some moments where we had a little lack of discipline whether on defense or our block or our coverage. That plagued us throughout. We’re right there, but we have to maintain that discipline against a good team like NC State.”

Bates knocked down 10 kills and picked up 13 digs for her eighth double-double of the season. Freshman outside hitter Payton Schwantz added 10 kills as well.

Duke amassed 12.0 blocks for the contest, led by seven stops from Summer Brown and five from Anna Kropf.

Duke led 20-19 following the Blue Devils’ sixth block of the opening set, but a 3-0 NC State spurt established a 22-20 Wolfpack advantage. NC State would not relinquish the lead and took the first, 25-23, on a kill that tipped off the net.

After an NC State service error established a 24-19 Blue Devil lead in the second, the Wolfpack fought off five set points to tie the score at 24-all. Duke countered with an Amos kill before an NC State kill and then block gave the Wolfpack the 27-25 decision.

“Volleyball’s a strange game where momentum can switch quickly,” Nagel said. “That’s one of the things our team needs to do a little bit better. We were doing some really good things, but during that stretch we just couldn’t put a ball away.”

NC State used a 4-0 stretch to open up what started as a close third set. Errors plagued the Blue Devils in the third as Duke committed 10 and hit .026 for the frame. The Wolfpack used the miscues to their advantage, winning 25-18.

NC State outside hitter Julia Brown led all players with 16 kills while the Wolfpack’s Brre Bailey also added 11.

The Blue Devils return to Cameron Indoor Stadium this coming weekend for ACC matches against Miami and Florida State, both on ACC Network Extra. Duke hosts Miami at 6:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 13 before welcoming Florida State at 1 p.m., Sunday Oct. 15.
