GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro men’s soccer (1-0) opened its 2019 regular season with a 2-0 victory over George Washington (0-1) Friday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium. Riley Copeland and Casey Penland both scored in the second half to lead the Spartans to the shutout victory.
Copeland provided the game-winner, which was also his first collegiate goal, in the 62nd minute. He got ahold of a loose ball in the box and buried a shot into the right side of the net from just a few yards out.
Just six minutes later, Penland headed in a ball from the right side of the box off a free kick from the midfield by Ethan Conley.

-- Eight newcomers make their debut for the Spartans: Aidan Wixted, Albert Pedra, Angel Bacho, Ethan Conley, Riley Copeland, Bryant Huerta, Mylo Hall and Cameron Fowler. For Bacho, Conley, Copeland, Hall and Fowler, the group of freshmen also made their collegiate debut.
The Spartans return to the pitch at Radford on Labor Day at 7 p.m.
