GREENSBORO, N.C. – The 2019 UNC Greensboro volleyball schedule has been released, as the Spartans will begin the upcoming campaign with the annual Spartan-Demon Deacon Classic where UNCG will play three games in Fleming Gymnasium.
In total, UNCG will play 14 non-conference games before the Southern Conference opener on Friday, Sept. 27 against Western Carolina.
"Our competition schedule this year is one that all Spartan fans, supporters and alumni will get excited about,” said Head Coach Corey Carlin. “First, this year will mark the 50th anniversary of volleyball at UNCG. That is a tremendous milestone. Not many volleyball programs in the country can say they have been around for 50 years, and I feel very fortunate to be a small part of this incredible legacy. Many people may not know that we have had 37 winning seasons out of the past 49, averaging nearly 19 wins per season, which is pretty incredible and something to be proud of. There is a great depth added to our competitive mindset this season, wanting to continue that legacy while truly understanding how rich the volleyball tradition is here.
“Secondly, with so many talented but young players coming in this fall, our primary goal for preseason scheduling was to have a good mix of competitive balance while also having more marquee matches at home. We definitely accomplished that goal. In addition to having headlining matches with Wake Forest, Duke and High Point at home, there will be many other opportunities for our fans to see high-level volleyball in Fleming Gym. This includes our conference match against Mercer on Saturday, October 19, which will serve as the centerpiece for our 50th anniversary celebration."
The Spartan-Demon Deacon Classic
UNCG will host a trio of games to open the season starting with North Carolina Central on Friday, Aug. 30. The following day, the Spartans will host a pair of games against Presbyterian and Wake Forest respectively. UNCG defeated Wake Forest 3-1 last season.
The Maverick Classic
UNCG will head to The Lone Star State to begin September play when UNCG faces Southern, Incarnate Word and UT-Arlington in the Maverick Classic. It will mark the longest road trip for the Spartans this season.
A Home Contest Against Duke
The Spartans will host a marquee game against the ACC’s Duke on Tuesday, Sept. 10 in a match that will start at 6:30 p.m. Last season, the Blue Devils accumulated an overall record of 16-12 as they earned a spot in the NCAA Tournament before falling to Loyola Marymount in the first round.
Colonial Classic And A Fellow Triad School In Fleming
Following the contest against Duke, UNCG will compete in the Colonial Classic that will take place Sept. 13-14 in Williamsburg, Va. The Spartans will compete against William & Mary, Georgetown and an Iona squad that went 16-2 in MAAC play before earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament where the Gaels took on Pittsburgh.
The following Wednesday, UNCG will host High Point.
Concluding Non-Conference Play
UNCG will wrap up non-conference action when the Spartans face Elon, Lehigh and Virginia in the Jefferson Cup. Lehigh won 20 matches last season.
The Spartans will then compete in 16 SoCon regular season games, including a Homecoming tilt against Mercer on Saturday, Oct. 19, before the Southern Conference Tournament takes play Nov. 22-24 in Spartanburg, S.C.
