JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – UNCG freshman hurler Austin Koehn tossed six innings, scattered five hits, allowed two runs and struck out five East Tennessee State batters as the Spartans moved their winning streak to six games with a 4-2 victory in Johnson City, Tenn., on Saturday, May 4th.

Koehn, who improved to 3-1 on the season, has now struck out at least five opposing hitters in his last six appearances for the Spartans. The UNCG freshman had only one inning in which he allowed multiple hits by the Bucs, which came in the fifth. Those two ETSU hits, singles by Noah Hill and Jackson Greer, resulted in runs crossing the plate.

Jack Voigt worked the seventh inning for the Spartans, allowing one hit while converting a strikeout, before giving way to Brandon Stephens. Stephens (S, 3) picked up his third save of the season as he tossed the final two innings of the game, facing six hitters along the way, finishing with one strikeout.

The UNCG (28-15, 10-7 SoCon) offense capitalized on four doubles and a home run in the game, marking the second time in the last four games that the Spartans have recorded at least five extra-base hits.

Greg Hardison was the lone hitter in the UNCG lineup with multiple hits on the game, finishing 2-for-4 from the plate, which resulted in a double, home run, two runs scored and an RBI. Zack Budzik, who notched his sixth double of the season, capped off the game by going 1-for-3 with a double. The remaining extra-base hits came from Austin Embler (1-4, double) and Hogan Windish (1-4, double).

UNCG broke a scoreless tie in the top of the second when Windish reached base with a double to left-centerfield on a 1-1 pitch. Two batters later, Jacquez Koonce singled to short to put runners on the corners with two outs. Budzik followed with a two-run double to left-centerfield, plating Windish and the fleet-footed Koonce to give the Spartans a 2-0 advantage.

The Spartans added their third run in the fifth when Hardison sent his first home run of the season over the left field wall on a 1-0 pitch by ETSU’s Landon Knack. The Bucs (28-16, 7-9 SoCon) answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame, cutting the margin to 3-2.

UNCG added an insurance run in the top of the eighth as Hardison reached base with a leadoff double into right-centerfield. Embler took advantage of a throwing miscue by Daulton Montagna, following a bunt, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Caleb Webster sent a sacrifice fly to centerfield, scoring Hardison from third, for the fourth and final run of the game.
