GREENSBORO, N.C. – The pitching duo of Jake Mayhew and Jeremiah Triplett combined to allow just six hits and record 12 strikeouts as they helped UNCG complete a three-game sweep of The Citadel with an 8-3 win on Sunday, April 28th at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Mayhew (1-0) picked up his first decision of the season after tossing the first five innings of the contest. In his first start and third appearance of the season, Mayhew allowed three hits and one run while striking out five of the 20 Citadel batters on the mound for the Spartans.

Triplett (S, 1) emerged from the bullpen for the third time this season in the sixth and would limit the Bulldogs to three hits, two runs, while converting seven strikeouts along the way. The seven strikeouts are the second-most in a single-game for Triplett this season, who converted eight in a win over Princeton on March 10th.

The two received solid offensive support from the trio of Zack Budzik (3-4, RBI, 2 runs), Caleb Webster (2-4, RBI, 2 runs) and Zach Kuchmaner (2-4, RBI). Collectively, UNCG finished with 10 hits, including the lone extra-base hit (triple) off the bat of freshman Jacquez Koonce.

The first of four two-run innings for the Spartans came in the bottom of the first when Kuchmaner singled to right field to score Austin Embler. Hogan Windish followed with a single to right, scoring Webster to give UNCG a 2-0 lead.

The Citadel put a run on the board in the top of the second, however UNCG answered with a single up the middle by Webster that plated Budzik from third. Webster manufactured the fourth run of the game by moving to second on a stolen base and third on a throwing error by the catcher before scoring the fourth run of the game on a passed ball.

The third straight two-run inning for the Spartans came in the third after Windish reached on a fielding error at third. Koonce cleared the bases with a triple to left field, extending the lead to 5-1, before scoring on a single by Budzik.

UNCG scored its final two runs of the game in the sixth after Koonce drew a leadoff walk and Budzik moved him to third with a single. Koonce would score on a wild pitch and Budzik crossed the plate on a grounder to short by Hardison to make for an 8-1 Spartan advantage.

The final two runs for the Bulldogs came on a two-run home run to right by Ches Goodman.
