ELON, N.C. – The UNCG women’s tennis team picked up their fourth win in their last four matches and third consecutive on Wednesday, April 3, when it earned a 5-2 victory at Elon.

The Spartans, who improved to 8-10 overall on the season, snapped a seven-year losing skid against Elon in the process. The last UNCG win against the Phoenix, who fell to 10-9 on the campaign, came on April 13, 2013 when they defeated then then 73rd-ranked Elon unit by a 4-3 margin.

UNCG snagged the first win in doubles action when the duo of Nancy Bridges / Erika Barquero came through with a 6-3 win over Maria Paraja / Alex Koniaev. Elon answered with a victory in No. 3 doubles by Suzanne Zenoni / Olivia Archer, who posted a 6-3 victory against Sophia Adams / Eugenia Camacho.

The combination of Emily Ory / Brianna Gomez earned the doubles point for UNCG with a 6-4 triumph over Uma Nayar / Nicole Shiau.

Elon quickly evened the match at 1-1 when Sofia Edo downed Ory by scores of 6-0, 6-3 in the meeting of No. 6 singles. Bridges got the Spartans back on track with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Zenoni, giving UNCG the one-point lead.

Gomez emerged with the third UNCG point of the afternoon, posting a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win against Archer. Camacho picked up her second win of the day, and the match clincher, with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Shiau.

Adams added to the UNCG lead with a three-set decision against Nayar by scores of 6-1, 6-7 (2-7), 6-4. Elon ended the day with its second point, which came from Paraja’s 6-4, 6-7 (2-7), 7-5 win against Barquero.

The Spartans remain on the road this weekend when they head to Chattanooga for a SoCon clash on Saturday, April 6th at 12 p.m.
