GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNC Greensboro softball (17-12, 1-2 Southern Conference) fell 7-4 in the series finale to Samford (13-22, 2-1) Sunday afternoon at UNCG Softball Stadium. The Bulldogs scored four unanswered runs, three in the sixth inning and one in the seventh, to take the series.

The Spartans had taken the lead in the fourth inning. Marisa Sholtes led off with an infield single and advanced to second base on a throwing error by the pitcher. Gabi Howard them homered to left field, her sixth of the year.

Sholtes hit a two-out solo homer to centerfield in the first inning for the game’s first run.

Samford grabbed its first lead the next inning with a two-out, two-run homer off the left field foul pole and added another run with a solo homer to left field in the following inning.

UNCG cut its deficit to one in the bottom of the inning. Delaney Cumbie knocked in Melanie Darges from second base on a two-out RBI-single up the middle.

UNCG returns to action next Saturday at Chattanooga with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. to kick off the weekend series.

News and Notes

- With 427 career strikeouts, Stephanie Bryden broke a tie with Winn Hazlegrove (1992-95) for fifth place all-time in program history.

- Bryden threw her 10th complete game of the season and allowed seven runs, six hits and four walks with 11 strikeouts.

- Sholtes homered in her first at-bat to centerfield for the fourth time in the last six games.

- Sholtes and Katie Stettler both went 2-3 at the plate, and Sholtes also had a walk.
