GREENSBORO, N.C. –UNC Greensboro men’s basketball on Saturday earned its tenth victory so far this season, as the Spartans defeated North Alabama 53-48 in the team’s lone appearance in Fleming Gymnasium this season.
With the victory, the Spartans set a new record for non-conference victories in a single season (10) since going to Division I conference play in 1993-94 while keeping pace with the 1994-95 squad that started that season 12-2 through 14 games, a program record.
UNCG struggled from the field early in the opening frame, as the Spartans’ first points in the contest didn’t come until almost six minutes into the action when sophomore guard Isaiah Miller hit a floater in the lane. Prior to Miller’s make, UNCG missed its first eight shot attempts from the field.
While UNCG still struggled from the field, the Spartans were able to get ahead of North Alabama by as much as 12 in the first half as they rattled off a 17-1 run over a near eight-minute span.
Defensively, UNCG was able to limit North Alabama to just 22 percent from the floor in the first half as the Lions hit just 6-of-28 shots including a three pointer at the buzzer.
Despite a nine-point halftime lead, UNCG saw its lead quickly evaporate as North Alabama began the second half 6-of-10 from the field with the Lions hitting back-to-back threes to tie the game at 30 before taking over the lead with 12:30 remaining at 34-32.
North Alabama went on to hold the lead for the next six minutes before senior guard Francis Alonso tied it up at 41-41 after making a layup and the free throw off an and-one.
Alonso’s play down the stretch was key to UNCG’s victory, as the senior scored seven of his 14 points in the final 4:43 of game time including the last five points in the game.
UNCG will close out non-conference play this upcoming Tuesday when the Spartans match up with Radford in a game that pits the reigning Southern Conference and Big South Champions.
Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
