BOONE, N.C. – UNC Greensboro women’s basketball nearly defeated Appalachian State as the Spartans fell to the Mountaineers 68-65 Thursday night in Holmes Center.

Junior guard Nadine Soliman recorded her first double-double of the season with 15 points, 14 in the second half, and a career-high and a game-high 14 rebounds with two steals, while sophomore forward Aja Boyd led the team with a game-high 18 points and nearly recorded a double-double with nine rebounds. 

Junior forward Te’ja Twitty recorded 17 points and five rebounds to give 498 career rebounds.  Twitty shot 7-for-16 from the floor. 

“I’m really proud of the team,” head coach Trina Patterson said.  “In these types of games, every possession matters.” 

The Mountaineers scored five of the first seven points in the first quarter to take a three-point lead, 5-2, with 9:03 remaining in the quarter, but the Spartans scored the next 12 points to take a nine-point lead, 14-5, with 5:02 left. ASU scored the next seven points to cut the lead to two points, 14-12, with 3:31 remaining, but UNCG scored the next four points to increase the lead to six points, 18-12.  Appalachian State scored the final four points to cut the first quarter deficit to two points, 18-16.

The Spartans scored 10 of the first 16 points in the second quarter to take a six-point lead, 28-22, with 2:58 remaining in the quarter, but Appalachian State scored six of the final nine points to cut the first half lead to three points, 31-28.

Appalachian State scored 11 of the first 17 points to take a two-point, 39-37, with 5:27 remaining in the third quarter, but the Spartans scored the next six points to take a four-point lead, 43-39, with 3:08 left.  ASU scored nine of the final 14 points to tie the game at 48 at the end of the third quarter.

The Mountaineers scored eight of the first 11 points in the final quarter to take a four-point lead, 56-52, with 6:36 remaining in the quarter, but the Spartans scored the next four points to tie the game at 56 with 5:07 left.  ASU scored eight of the next 12 points to take a four-point lead, 64-60, with 19 seconds left, but a Soliman three-point cut the lead to a point, 64-63, with 18 seconds left. Appalachian State scored four of the final six points to give the Mountaineers the three-point victory.

The Spartans return home for a two-game homestand starting with Young Harris Tuesday at 11 a.m. for Education Day in Fleming Gymnasium.
