GREENSBORO, N.C.– UNC Greensboro women’s volleyball team (9-12, 3-6 Southern Conference) dropped a close five-setter to Mercer (10-10, 3-6 SoCon) 3-2 (23-25, 25-16, 26-24, 18-25, 10-15) in Fleming Gymnasium to being a three-match homestand Friday night.
“It’s great to be back at home after being on the road,” head coach Corey Carlin said. “We had some opportunities in the first set and we didn’t capitalize. I think Allison (Penner) did a great job tonight. She set the ball well and was offensively when we needed her to be.”
Senior setter Allison Penner was one kill from recording a triple-double as the Aurora, Neb., native led the team with 48 assists and added 11 digs and nine kills with a .529 hitting percentage, while sophomore outside hitter Maria Esch led the team with 14 kills and recorded a .270 hitting percentage and added four digs.
Freshman defensive specialist Stephanie Meysembourg led the team with 21 digs and added six assists, while junior outside hitter Emily Keilen added 13 kills and seven digs. Freshman defensive specialist Mandy Garvens added nine digs, while junior middle hitter Mikaela Weidmann added nine kills with a .389 hitting percentage and four blocks and freshman outside hitter Anne Schölzel added nine kills and three blocks.
Mercer scored eight of the first 13 points in the first set to take a three-point lead, 8-5, but the Spartans scored 10 of the next 14 points to take a three-point lead, 15-12, forcing a Mercer timeout. After the timeout, the Bears scored 13 of the final 21 points to win the set by two points and to take a 1-0 match lead.
The Spartans started hot in the second stanza scoring seven of the first eight points to take a six-point lead, 7-1, but Mercer scored four of the next six points to cut the lead to four points, 9-5. UNCG outscored MU 14-11 during the rest of the set to win the set by nine points and to tie the match at one.
The Bears sored 13 of the first 24 points in the third frame to take a four-point lead, 13-9, forcing a UNCG timeout. After the timeout, the Spartans scored seven of the next 10 points to tie the set at 16. Mercer scored six of the next 10 points to take a two-point lead, 22-20, but UNCG scored the next three points to take a point lead, 23-22. However, the Bears scored two of the next three points to tie the set at 24, but the Spartans scored the final two points to win the set by two points and to take a 2-1 match lead.
Mercer scored 19 of the first 30 points in the fourth set to take an eight-point lead, 19-11, but the Spartans scored five of the next seven points to cut the lead to five points, 21-16. The Bears scored four of the final six points to win the set by seven points and to tie the match at two, forcing a final fifth set.
The Spartans scored the first two points in the final stanza, but Mercer quickly tied the set at two by scoring the next two points. Neither team could get more than a two-point lead until the Bears scored back-to-back points after the set was tied at five to take a 7-5 lead, but the Spartans quickly tied the set at seven the set by scoring the next two points. Mercer scored eight of the final 11 points to win the set by five points and to win the match.
The Bears were led by Paige Alsten and Brittany Major with 15 kills each, Maddie Nunley with 60 assists and Roberta Todd with 22 digs. Nunley added 10 digs for a double-double, while Todd added 14 kills for a double-double.
The Spartans face The Citadel Saturday at 5 p.m. in Fleming Gymnasium for the “Dig Pink” match.
