GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG softball (4-0) beat North Carolina 6-5 Friday night at UNCG Softball Stadium. The Spartans scored six of the game’s last seven runs to get its third-straight victory over the Tar Heels dating back to last year’s fall season.
UNCG trailed 4-0 entering the fourth inning but got its first lead in the inning. Delaney Cumbie tied it up with a grand slam, and Samantha Lagrama knocked in Melanie Darges for the go-ahead run on a single up the middle.
After North Carolina tied it up the next inning, Gabi Howard led off the seventh inning with a double off the right field wall. With Makenna Matthijs pinch-running, she advanced to third base on a passed ball and scored on a fielding error by the first baseman on a throw from a groundball by Jasmine Palmer.
Stephanie Bryden started the game and went four complete innings. She allowed four runs, three hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
Kylie Bouplon threw the next two innings. After giving up a run on an infield single in the fifth inning, she retired the side the next inning with a groundout, live drive to first baseman Marisa Sholtes and flyout.
Hannah Stiltner entered the circle in the seventh inning and inherited a runner on first base. After the first out was recorded on interference on a baserunner, catcher Samantha Lagrama caught a Tar Heel attempting to steal second base. Stiltner ended the top of the inning with a groundout and allowed just one walk with no hits in the scoreless inning.
UNCG returns to action against Queens University at home next Friday at 7 p.m.
