LAWRENCE, Kan.– UNC Greensboro volleyball team (6-6) fell to the University of Kansas (6-4) 3-0 (22-25, 15-25, 17-25) Saturday.
Sophomore outside hitters Maria Esch and Holly Behrends and junior outside hitter Emily Keilen each added eight kills, while senior setter Allison Penner led the team with 29 assists and added five digs and Behrends led the team with 10 digs.
Kansas scored seven of the first 10 points of the first set to take a four-point lead, 7-3, but UNCG scored the next three points to cut the lead to a point, 7-6. The Jayhawks scored seven of the next 11 points to increase their lead to four points, 14-10.
The Spartans scored the next two points to cut the lead to two points, 14-12, but KU outscored UNCG 11-10 during the rest of the set to win the first set and to take a 1-0 match lead.
Kansas started out hot again in the second set by scoring six of the first nine points to take a three-point lead, 6-3 and outscored UNCG 19-12 during the rest of the second frame to win the set and to take a 2-0 match lead.
The Spartans scored four of the first five points of the final stanza to take a three-point lead, 4-1, but the Jayhawks scored seven of the next eight points to take a three-point lead, 8-5. KU outscored UNCG 17-12 during the rest of the set to win the set and the match.
The Jayhawks were led by Jada Burse with a match-high 11 kills, Camryn Enis with 25 assists and added a match-high 14 digs for a double-double.
The Spartans start the Southern Conference schedule this weekend with a trip to Charleston, S.C., to face The Citadel Friday at 6 p.m. and to Macon, Ga., to face Mercer University Saturday at 2 p.m.
